Prose that Catches: Hook, Line and Sinker

Song of Blood and Stone by L. Penelope

L. Penelope is such a phenomenal writer.

What I loved about this book is that Penelope’s writing is rich and evocative. She’s one of those writers who carefully balances giving enough description (without too much) and really deepens and paints the picture with specific words.

She may not use an overabundance of words, but you can tell that the ones she chooses are well placed and totally intentional.

She’s created this world that feels both historic and current. It’s a fantasy based in modernity. She has this whole new magical system that I’ve been so thrilled to sink into.

To top it off, the magic system is very unique.

This is one of those books that I read in the bathroom so I can have two more minutes with it. It gives me that little moment of self care, a recharge, during the day.

Fortunately for me, she has a whole series! Full of a hugely diverse cast of delightful characters.

Suffice to say, I think L. Penelope is an author emerging as a powerhouse in the Fantasy world and one that I can totally see staying.

I can’t wait to pick up the next book!

This is such an awesome book. The world she creates is so authentic and the characters are some of my newest friends. This one book took me on a journey that is ongoing in upcoming books in the series. Awesome.
