T’was a Night in the Networks

T’was a night in the Networks is a poem by Mike Thompson, a team member at Katie Cross Writing, written in the style of T’was the Night Before Christmas.

T’was the night before Christmas and all through the Wood

Hardly a creature was stirring, which was just as it should.

The stockings were hanging on the mantle just so.

The slow dying embers barely reaching the toes.

Little witches tucked in bed covered with fur pelts,

The crisp winter wind couldn’t even be felt.

With Mama in dreamland and Papa there, too.

The stress of the day having gone up the flue.

When out in the night a noise strange and loud.

Brought me out of my dreams and into the now.

I ran to the shutters to see what I could spy.

And I scanned all the forest and all the night sky.

The moon, how it shined in a glorious way.

Letum Wood was alight as if it were day.

Then what I saw could not possibly be there,

Eight magnificent dragons pulling a magic volare.

Two riders, both female, they looked quite the same

And in the still of the evening they called them by name:

On Talis, go Thyris, fly Rosy and Junis

Go Rubeis and Meris, Cara and Luteis.

And then through the rafters I heard dragons land, so immense.

And the soft, distinct whispers of the two sisters Spence.

Both dressed in warm clothing befitting the cold air.

They transported inside to drop off their wares.

I snuck through the darkness, ever light on my feet.

Not knowing they’re Watchers, they said, “Merry Meet!”

After that not a word, they just kept to their paces

As they dropped off their treasures with smiles on their faces.

Then completing their job they gathered their things.

To the roof they went back to their companions with wings.

They mounted the carpet, gave the dragons a look.

And with barely a word, to the air the group took.

As I watched them rise higher silhouetted by moonlight.

“Merry Christmas, Alkarra!” they said. “And to all a good night!”

Happy holidays from the folks at Katie Cross Writing!

I loved it. At first I thought: What no rudolph? Then I realized that first he wouldn’t even be a snack for the dragons and Second with dragon fire they could see through any fog.
Sending you a spell for a wonderful white Christmas and Happy New Year!! May the magic never cease, for you, your family, and all who bring magic to your writing. To Mike you truly multitalented. A poet, Vintner and wise beyond your years. My the new year bring you much happiness as well. I look forward to more great things.
